playing in the atlantic - Van G. Garrett/Fui Koshi

i renamed the ocean aya:
her indomitable spirit moved me
as she resounded in my ears
like chants bouncing on the coast
where those with and without my okra name
progressed in my likeness and greeted me
dashing       gifts       smiles       handshakes
as if we have walked africa’s paths together before

Thank you, Kafui, for a literal snap shot of our beloved land. The promise of poetry in our land is so alive in our proverbs, culture and history. I am happy that you have digested the necessary ingredients to appreciate every Ghanaian culture. Welcome to the land of your ancestors. We seek to keep our dreams alive by the wisdom of our general experience. Your poem is a breeze that loses not its original freshness. I hope our other brethren in diaspora will get a chance to update on their consciousness about the motherland.
